Commercial diving involves exposure to increased pressure, significant strain on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems, and the risk of decompression sickness and barotrauma. For this reason, every commercial diver must hold a valid medical certificate confirming no health contraindications to performing underwater work.

Scope of Examinations for Commercial Divers

Examinations for commercial divers include a detailed health assessment and specialized medical tests necessary for issuing a medical certificate. Depending on the type of underwater work performed, the diagnostic scope may include:

✔️ medical examination conducted by a physician authorized to certify fitness for underwater work,

✔️ assessment of the respiratory system, including spirometry,

✔️ cardiovascular system examinations, including resting ECG and, where clinically indicated, stress ECG,

✔️ ENT examination with assessment of nasal patency, paranasal sinuses, and hearing organs,

✔️ audiometric hearing test,

✔️ ophthalmological examination, including assessment of visual acuity and color vision,

✔️ neurological evaluation, and EEG examination if indicated,

✔️ chest diagnostic imaging,

✔️ laboratory blood and urine tests,

✔️ assessment of the musculoskeletal system for the safe execution of underwater work,

✔️ other specialized examinations required by regulations or medical indications.

Who Must Undergo Medical Examinations for Underwater Work?

Examinations for divers are required for, among others:

• commercial divers,
• candidates for commercial divers,
• individuals performing underwater work in construction, hydroengineering, and industry,
• divers carrying out technical, inspection, and rescue work,
• persons working in hyperbaric conditions (increased pressure).

Medical Certificate for a Commercial Diver

Upon completion of the diagnostic process, a medical certificate is issued stating the absence or existence of contraindications to performing underwater work. During the qualification process, special attention is paid to respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and ENT conditions, as well as other diseases that may increase the risk of complications during diving.
