Fitness for Work at Height Assessment

This examination applies to employees working at heights above 3 meters, in particular the operators listed below, who operate any high-bay machinery:

crane operators.
excavator operators.
overhead crane operators.
forklift operators, etc.

The examinations conclude with the issuance of a medical certificate specifying recommendations, contraindications, and an opinion on the employee’s fitness for the specific position.

In particular, the medical certificate states:

absence of medical contraindications to work in the specified position
presence of medical contraindications to work in the specified position

G41 Medical Examination

The G41 examination is one of the mandatory preventive medical examinations required in Germany for employees working under conditions of exceptional psychophysical stress.
It mainly applies to individuals working:

at heights above 2 meters,
in confined spaces (e.g., tanks, shafts, sewers),
in situations with an increased risk of falling,
under high physical and psychological stress.

Who must undergo the G41?

The G41 medical examination is mandatory for employees working in Germany in the following positions:

Scaffolder

Responsible for assembling, dismantling, and securing scaffolding used on construction sites and in high-altitude work. Often works several to dozens of meters above the ground, requiring excellent coordination, balance, and no fear of heights.

Electrician Working at Height

Performs electrical installations or power grid repairs on roofs, utility poles, and aerial lifts. Must demonstrate precision, stress tolerance, and full psychophysical fitness.

Construction Worker Operating on Roofs and Steel Structures

Carries out structural and finishing tasks under challenging conditions at height. Good spatial awareness, physical strength, and no medical contraindications to working at high elevations are essential.

Machine Operator in Confined / Hard-to-Reach Spaces

Operates construction or industrial equipment (e.g., skid-steer loaders, drilling rigs) in narrow, restricted areas. The job requires precision, fast reflexes, and sound situational judgment under stressful conditions.

Personnel Working in Tanks, Manholes, and Tunnels

Performs maintenance or construction tasks in confined spaces, often with limited air supply and lighting. Requires mental resilience, good physical endurance, and no claustrophobia.
